Globe Inn

More Recent Landlords

We left the census of 1911 with James Usher Winkfield and his family as landlords of the Globe Hotel. James U. Winkfield died in 1918 and it is believed that his wife Annie continued until Michaelmas 1921 as is shown in the following advert of the sale of effects from the Globe.

Advert 1921 – sale of Globe Inn

It is probable that Arthur Edward Collins became owner of the “Globe” properties after the retirement of Annie Winkfield.

We have no record of whether Arthur Collins took on the job as publican or if he employed a manager. Kelly’s Trade Directories of 1923 and 1926 give Mabel L. Collins as Landlord of the Globe. Is she related to Arthur Edward Collins who at this time was listed as Landlord of the Moorpark Hotel in Chagford?

We do know that Kelly’s of 1930, 1933 and 1935 list A. E. Collins as the landlord of the Globe so it is possible that a relative was looking after the Globe while Arthur Edward was still at the Moorpark. A. E. Collins must have sold the Moorpark by 1930 as Kelly’s now lists M. K. Cowdell as the new landlord.

Records show that William Leeson was manager of the Globe at some time in the 1920’s. In 1934 Arthur Edward Collins sold the inn (but not the shops, cottages, stables etc.) to Truman Hanbury Buxton Breweries.

It is probable that during the tenure of the Collins family the attic roof space was converted to extra bedrooms and dormer windows were added. It is also recorded in the 1939 register that Arthur Vincent is the licensee at that time he died at the Globe in 1940. After this time we have the names G. R. Taylor and A. E. Farmer from the late 1940’s to the early 1960’s.

In 1947, the Collins family offered for sale all the “Globe” property, except the Inn itself, (having previously been sold in 1934). This included the two shops (now Amy’s Flower Shop and The Green Man tea rooms formerly Whiddons) the Rex Cinema, several cottages, stables, outhouses etc.

There then follows a name well remembered by many older Chagfordians, Mr and Mrs Fred Brend. Mrs Brend reputedly made the best pasties in the area!

In May 1981 Colin and Beverley Absom purchased the Globe Inn and carried out what seems to be the first major renovations for over 50 years!

While retaining the public bar in similar style as the original, they created a new openplan lounge bar and dining room out of a mix of an old snug, parlour and various small rooms. During these renovations, they removed the existing 1950’s tiled fireplace to reveal a brick built pre-war fireplace. Behind this was a stone range (probably Victorian) and behind that, the magnificent granite fireplace we see today.

Gerald and Polly Catterall 1986-1988
The Globe c.1981

In 1986 the Globe was purchased by Mr and Mrs G Catterall. In 1988 Mr Catterall lost his liquor license and an attempt was made by Mr John Giles landlord of the nearby hotel the Three Crowns to obtain an occasional license to keep the Globe operational. This attempt failed and the Globe continued for several months as accommodation and food service only. This was to force the sale of the Globe and by August 1988 Tony and Maureen Barber became the new landlords until November 1991.

Milla Jackson & Andrew Kent, circa 2000

New landlords for almost the next decade were Bryn and June Dando who eventually sold to Enterprise Inns in 2000.

Andrew Kent and his partner Milla Jackson were the first landlords under the Enterprise Inns banner.

They sold on to Brian and Ann Kertly in 2006 and by November 2008 the present owners Graham Flight and Mary French are in charge.
